Fact v Fiction
Mosques are overrunning churches
Claims are circulating online – including statements from an individual in Yorkshire – that churches are being converted to mosques at such a scale that Christians will become a minority, even within the judiciary.
We have cross‑checked these claims against official government figures, independent research and verified statistical sources. This dossier sets out the full, realistic picture:
- Total active churches: ~42,000
- Total active mosques: ~2,150
- Around 20 times more churches than mosques across the UK
- Only around 20–30 churches total have ever been converted to mosques since the 1960s
- We also include verified data on fires and vandalism affecting both churches and mosques over the last 12 months
It is vital we remain grounded in reality and are not swept up by unsubstantiated claims. We must focus on the real issues that matter to our communities, without allowing ourselves to be distracted or divided.
