A Town Under Siege by Its Own Council

On 1 June 2026, East Lothian Council imposed parking charges on North Berwick — a rural coastal town of roughly 8,000 people — against overwhelming local opposition. A petition of 5,000 signatures was ignored. The Community Council and Business Association were overruled. A motion to pause and review was voted down.

- Nearly 1 in 5 people surveyed say they will not return to North Berwick

- 87% of those staying away cite parking costs as the sole reason

- One established family business is losing approximately £1,000 per day

- Three shops were reported as close to closing within weeks of enforcement beginning

Locals have stopped browsing. Workers are losing shifts. A town that depends on footfall is being hollowed out — deliberately, and without consent.

We conducted this investigation without charge to North Berwick residents because we do not believe communities should be railroaded into policies they never voted for.
