The Reality of Abuse by Those in Power

Abuse of power can take many forms, from neglecting child protection policies to direct exploitation. In the UK, organizations such as the NSPCC have been pushing for legislative changes to strengthen child protection laws. Their Six Point Plan to Protect Children calls for reforms in social care, stronger child protection measures, and better support for early intervention.

Meanwhile, the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) has been working tirelessly to combat online child sexual abuse. In 2024 alone, they assessed over 291,273 reports of child sexual abuse imagery and worked to remove more than 1.2 million webpages containing such content. Their efforts highlight the growing need for digital safety measures to protect children from online exploitation.

Legislative Efforts and Public Advocacy

Governments have a responsibility to enact laws that protect children from abuse, but public pressure is often necessary to drive meaningful change. In March 2025, the UK Parliament debated the Protection of Children (Digital Safety and Data Protection) Bill, which aims to address the dangers of excessive screen time and social media use among children. The bill acknowledges the link between smartphone addiction and rising rates of anxiety and depression in young people, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations on tech companies.

Public advocacy plays a crucial role in ensuring these laws are enforced. Survivors of abuse, activists, and concerned citizens have been vocal in demanding accountability from politicians and institutions that fail to protect children. Social movements and grassroots campaigns have successfully pressured governments to take action, proving that collective voices can drive change.
